Book Info

From Mughal Outpost to Metropolis is the first book that provides a pictorial history of the evolution of Dhaka’s urban social and political fabric and architecture. The book tells the story of how people lived, thought, and made this great city of the East. Dhaka’s four hundred years of history is a collage of the legacy of the great empires, the Mughals and the British, and many foreign interlopers, like French, Greek, Arabs, Afghans, Turks, and Armenians, who came to this land seeking business and fortune. Like many other cities of the developing world, Dhaka is a fast growing metropolis of nearly nine million people, a large proportion of them living in poor, unsanitary conditions. Against this background, is the sharply contrasting signs of modernism; the high-rise buildings, the automobiles, and the computers.
