Early influences were the reading of the lyrics of devotional/love songs in Praise of Vishnu; the Brahmo services he attended at Santiniketan, the services he conducted there as guru; Baul cult songs and lyrics of Sanskrit copies of the Hindu scriptures and myths, Bengali and English literature.
Brother James
Reverend Brother James Talarovic C.S.E. was born on 4 May 1915 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, where he went to school. He studied science at Notre Dame University and taught chemistry in Indianapolis, Indiana. He arrived in Bengal in January 1941 and worked as Superintendent of Schools. He has been familiar with Bangla poetry for a long time. The poetry of Tagore is his only love. The mystic quality of this great poet inspired him to be a translator.
