The book is the first of its kind empirical study of terrorism based in Bangladesh focusing on the process of radicalization, ideology and youth vulnerabilities that lead to violence. Undertaking qualitative research methods, it has been written based on primarily data collected from terrorist suspects, their families, law enforcement officials and experts of various disciplines. Based on the incidence of terrorism that takes on a politico-religious nature, the book attempts to understand which factors play significant roles in developing violent singular identities and looks into indoctrination, politics and proliferation, vulnerable youth along with the vulnerability of regions to extremism.
Zia Rahman
Zia Rahman is a Professor and the founding Chairman of the Department of Criminology at the University of Dhaka, and is a sociologist. He has a 2nd Masters and a Ph.D. from the University of Calgary (U of C), Canada where he also taught two senior undergraduate courses, and contributed as a Teaching Assistant for more than 15 semesters. Dr. Zia is in the Board of Directors at the International Society of Criminology. His areas of research include labour relations and labour movements, social movements, globalization, urban sociology, political sociology and criminology.
Monirul Islam
Monirul Islam is an additional commissioner of Bangladesh Police and the current Chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC). He graduated in British Law from Northumbria University, UK, completed an MA in English, MSS in Criminology and Criminal Justice and PGD in Genocide Studies from Dhaka University. Mr. Islam was awarded “Bangladesh Police Medal” and “President Police Medal” for five times in recognition of his distinguished service for detective Branch as well as for his tactful media management and the CTTCU. He has been teaching Criminology as a part time teacher (Adjunct Faculty) at the University of Dhaka for last three years.
