Rockefeller 3rd Fund Scholar, 1968-69 Education & Trainings: Tanwir Nawaz entered as a student in the first Faculty of Architecture and Planning in East Pakistan University of Engineering & Technology (EPUET, later BUET) in 1962 and graduated with a B. Arch. Architect Tanwir Nawaz was placed near the top in the First Class (second in order of merit) in B.Arch. program in EPUET in 1967. Later, he obtained M. Arch. (in Urban Design and Environmental Studies) at the top of his class form Texas A&M University, USA in 1969. He was a student of Professors/ Architects Richard Edwin Vrooman, James Walden, Jack Yeardley (in EPUET/ BUET), and of Professors Edward Romenic, Wes Harper, Robert White (Professor of Landscape Architecture) and Professor Langford (Environmental studies) (in Texas A&M University, USA). He was a pupil and co-worker of Architect Louis I Kahn (Architect of National Assembly of Bangladesh), having worked under him in his office in 1965-1967 and later from the Bangladesh Planning Commission in 1972-1973 in Dhaka. He has been an admirer and established personal relationship with Eng. Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan (Chief Structural Engineer and Partner, SOM Chicago) designer of John Hancock and Sears Roebuck Towers in Chicago and Hajj Terminal in Saudi Arabia. He also worked under Architect Muzharul Islam as a Junior Architect on the East Pakistan Machine Tools Factory project, (Joydevpur in 1968-1970). Practice & Areas of Significant Work: Architect Tanwir Nawaz worked for Consulting Engineers (East Pakistan) (1968 and 1969-1970) and as Assistant Professor Department of Architecture BUET (1972), and later as Deputy Chief of Physical Planning, Housing & Infrastructure Division (PPH&I) in the First Planning Commission, Government of (Bangabandhu) Bangladesh. He established the Department of Architecture under the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (1972-1973). His other employments include, as Chief Architect of Consulting Engineers (1969-1970), Design and Project Architect for Moffat Moffat & Kinoshita, Toronto, Canada (1974-1975), Senior Architect, Department of Urban Affairs, Province of Saskatchewan, Canada (1977-1979) and Project Planner for the City of Toronto Housing Department (City Home) Toronto, Ontario, Canada (1979-1981), Chief Architect and Associate Partner, Annau Architects Toronto, (1987-1989), Senior Architect Grainger Boyle Architects and Brisbin Brooks & Beynon Architects and Planners Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (1987-1991). He was also Project Director for Defence Construction Canada (DCC), Ottawa (2007-2009) and was in charge of $10 billion redevelopment program for Bedford Park (NATO) Naval Base in Halifax, Canada. He practiced on his own as Tanwir Nawaz Architect Ltd. in Regina Saskatchewan (1981-1987), as Tanwir Nawaz Architect in Ottawa (1991-) and Tanwir Nawaz Architect in Dhaka (1995-) and as the Managing Director of Urban Habitat Ltd. (1995-2007). And lately as Chairman of Urban Habitat Consultants (2007-to date).
