Masud Mahmood

Born into a culturally liberal family in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1953, Masud Mahmood completed his degrees in English and American literature at Dhaka University and obtained a Ph.D. in Emily Dickinson’s poems and letters from there, later on published as Launched into Eternity: A Study of Emily Dickinson’ Poems and Letters (2009) to considerable critical acclaim. He started teaching in the Department of English, Chittagong University in 1977 and retired as Professor of English in 2018. In the course of his academic career, he developed a passion for poetry and turned his hand to writing poetry. His first book of verse Listening to Me was published in 2012. Besides, he took an interest in translating Bangla poetry, published translations and co-authored Selected Poems of Abul Hasan. He has also published scholarly articles at home and abroad. Currently, he lives in Chittagong city with his painter wife Nasima Akhter.
