Fakhruddin Ahmed

"Fakhruddin Ahmed was born in 1931. He obtained MA in International Relations from Dhaka University in 1952. He joined the Foreign Service of Pakistan in 1954. From 1957-71 he served in different capacities at the Pakistan Diplomatic Missions in Jedda, New York, Tehran, Accra and at the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad. Following independence of Bangladesh he was appointed Additional Foreign Secretary in January, 1973 and later he served as Foreign Secretary from October, 1974 to November, 1975. He served as Ambassador of Bangladesh to Italy (1976-77), to Yugoslavia (1978, 1982) and as High Commissioner for Bangladesh to the United Kingdom (May 1982 to July 1986). He was again appointed as Foreign Secretary (1986 to 1987) and at the end of the term he formally retired from service. He became Adviser for Foreign Affairs with the rank of Cabinet Minister to the Acting President of Bangladesh (1990-1991). As a member of Observer Group he observed elections in Sri Lanka (1988 and 1989), Pakistan (1990 and 1993), Nepal and India (1991). Zambia (October, 1991) and Guyana (September, 1992). He also served as an International Electoral Observer with the United Nations Observer Mission in South Africa in April, 1994."
