Abstract

This chapter discusses the background history of the origin and development of the Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka. It examines how the department’s foundation in 1957 was the direct outcome of the modernization project adopted and implemented by western nations, universities, and social scientists. Moreover, this chapter will discuss how the department has contributed to understanding social change in Bangladesh, both theoretically and empirically. The authors of this chapter have further identified various academic traditions developed and nurtured by former faculty members and updated by the department’s current scholars. The chapter also links Sociology courses with 2030 SDG targets and discuss the potential of the department in the near future.
