Kazi Nazrul Islam’s dramatic works remain one of the least explored aspects of his literary legacy. While he is celebrated for his revolutionary poetry and music, his plays have received far less critical attention. This volume seeks to recover and showcase the richness of Nazrul’s dramatic imagination, revealing a writer deeply engaged with faith, love, devotion, and social ideals. The collection presents English translations of three of Nazrul’s plays—Srimanta, Vidyapati, and Vishnupriya—which together illuminate his lyrical artistry, spiritual vision, and humanistic concerns. Through themes of longing, sacrifice, and devotion, these works offer fresh insight into an important yet overlooked dimension of his oeuvre. The volume also includes translations of thirteen songs composed by Nazrul for the celebrated playwright Manmatha Roy’s drama Layla-Majnu. Translated collaboratively by four students from Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), this collection introduces English-language readers to a rich but often neglected part of Nazrul’s oeuvre, highlighting the range, originality, and lasting appeal of his dramatic works.
Ahmed Ahsanuzzaman
Ahmed Ahsanuzzaman is Professor of English, and Director of the Kazi Nazrul Islam and Abbasuddin Ahmed Research and Study Centre at IUB. Interested in Shakespeare, Ibsen, Postcolonial Studies, Translation and Performance Studies, he is a theatre director and has directed seven performances so far.
Rabiah Binthe Hossain
Rabiah Binthe Hossain is the Vice Chancellor’s Gold Medalist in English Literature from Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), and completed her M.A. in Comparative Literature. She co-authored ‘The Ballad of Titumir’, an epic that reimagines one of Bengal’s most resonant historical narratives.
Zarifa Taneer Chowdhury
Zarifa Taneer Chowdhury is pursuing her master’s in English Literature at IUB. She is a poet, and her poems have featured in the magazines of Gulshan, Dhaka and Raowa Clubs.
Farhin Tasnim
Farhin Tasnim is a Summa Cum Laude graduate and has earned both her BA and MA in English literature from IUB. She co-authored ‘The Ballad of Titumir’.
Mayisha Mizan Neeha
Mayisha Mizan Neeha graduated in English Literature from IUB. She is building her career in digital marketing, a field that keeps her closely attuned to voice, audience, and the shades of meaning that words can carry.
