In “Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami: Its History and Politics”, Barrister Abdur Razzaq delivers an insider critique of one of South Asia's most scrutinized political movements. Drawing on five decades of involvement as the party’s Assistant Secretary General, Razzaq offers a candid exploration of Jamaat's internal dynamics. He addresses the party's defining paradox—a disciplined workforce versus limited popular appeal. Razzaq directly confronts the shadow of Jamaat’s opposition to Bangladesh’s 1971 independence, detailing his push for a national apology—a principled stand that led to his 2019 resignation amid entrenched resistance to reform. Citing models like Turkey’s AK Party and Tunisia’s Ennahda, the book outlines a blueprint for structural renewal by separating dawah from politics. It is an indispensable resource for understanding the intersection of Islam, democracy, and politics in contemporary Bangladesh.
Abdur Razzaq
Abdur Razzaq (1949-2025) was one of Bangladesh’s most distinguished Senior Advocates, renowned for his contributions to constitutional, public, commercial, and international criminal law. Born in Sylhet, he studied Economics and was called to the Bar by Lincoln’s Inn in 1980. After practicing in England under former Attorneys General Sir Michael Havers QC and Lord Peter Rawlinson QC, he returned to Bangladesh in 1985, founding The Law Counsel in 1990. Over a four-decade career, he shaped Bangladeshi jurisprudence through numerous landmark Supreme Court cases. Between 2010 and 2013, he served as Chief Defence Counsel before the International Crimes Tribunal. He was also a prominent public intellectual, serving as Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami until resigning from the party in 2019.
