Ambassador M. Serajul Islam (1947–2024) was a distinguished career diplomat, academic, and political commentator. A graduate of the University of Dhaka and Brock University, Canada, his foreign service career spanned over three decades across four continents, including postings in Australia, India, China, the United States, Japan, and Egypt. Among his notable achievements, he spearheaded the establishment of the Tokyo Shahid Minar—the first such monument built outside Bangladesh. Following his retirement as Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Japan in 2006, he dedicated himself to public intellectual life, authoring over 3,000 essays and columns on democratic governance, state institutions, and foreign affairs. Known for speaking truth to power at significant personal risk, his prolific writings and direct counsel to student leaders and diplomats laid crucial intellectual groundwork during the pro-democracy movement leading up to the mass uprising of August 2024.
