Abu Tayyab Muhammad Anisuzzaman (1937-2020) was a distinguished Bangladeshi academic, writer and activist whose life’s work was deeply tied to the nation’s intellectual and political history. He participated in the Language Movement (1952), the Mass Uprising (1969) and the Liberation War (1971), serving in the Planning Commission of the Mujibnagar Government and later helping draft Bengali portion of Bangladesh’s Constitution. A professor at Dhaka and Chittagong universities, he also taught in Visva-Bharati, North Carolina State University and University of Paris. He authored over 40 books, published nationally and internationally. Anisuzzaman received the Ekushey Padak in 1985 and the Independence Award in 2015. In 2014, Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan. Named a National Professor in 2018, he also served as the Chairperson of the Bangla Academy for four terms.
