Development Issues of Bangladesh-III has been written with the theme: human development and quality of life in Bangladesh.
The present volume is a compilation of articles originally published at various times in the Journal of Bangladesh Studies. The selection was predicated on two main criteria: their immediate relevance to the Bangladesh economy and the reputation of the authors who have a track record of publications in international journals and have influenced the thinking of others through their insightful writing. The book covers a gamut of important areas that concern economists and have the potential to shape economic thinking in Bangladesh.
Perspectives and Analysis presents the thought of prominent thinkers about political issues pertaining to Bangladesh about which there is need for serious contemplation and action. It contains ideas about the country’s political culture, challenges and democratization, approaches to institution building, issues of leadership and legitimacy, and the continuing saga of conflict between the two main political rivals and possible solutions.
Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) are an integral aspect of society in Bangladesh. They provide a variety of services to people, generate employment, mobilize public opinion, and influence governmental policy. They remain as an important liaison with the donor community and are a substantial cultural, political and economic presence in the country. NGOs are involved in many important sectors of the economy such as education, health, and finance.
This volume is based on selected papers from two conferences on Bangladesh at Harvard University in 2008 and 2009. It covers a variety of challenging topics, ranging from linkages between democracy and security to effects of a given electoral system on political stability, micro-national autonomy for subregional peace, terrorism and its counter-forces. It also covers the role of NGOs in development and social change, intra-regional cooperation in conflict mitigation and refugee related violence in South Asia.
