This is an insightful narrative of a South Asian Diplomat. Fakhruddin Ahmed is an illustrious diplomat from Bangladesh. He writes about his varied experiences highlighting some very interesting and fascinating events including deep insight concerning negotiations between India and Pakistan over Kashmir during the sixties. The vision of independent Bangladesh, freedom struggle and its trials and tribulations are all sharply focused. While tracing the evolution of Bangladesh foreign policy the author gives an account of the first four years of Bangladesh foreign policy which secured for Bangladesh a position of respect in the Third World. The final section of the book takes a very critical view of illegal seizure of power by the military junta led by General Ershad which blocked progress of the nation. Fakhruddin is strongly in favour of consensus management of economy and foreign policy and points out candidly that future economic development of Bangladesh is very much linked with the regional co-operation like SAARC and for Bangladesh there is no other viable option.
