Dr. Shew Lu Maung hails from Arakan of Burma. As a Rangoon University student, his ambition was to become a member of parliament. Opposing the military government which came to power through a coup in 1962 he joined in a guerrilla force, but left the jungle demontrator at the University of Rangoon. He won a Colombo Plan Fellowship and in 1976 earned a Ph.D. in reproductive endocrinology rom the University of Wales, UK. In 1982 he joined a group known as the Political Exiles of Burma which merged in 1987 with the Committee for Restoration of Democracy in Burma (CRDB). He worked as Secretary, CRDB, Bangladesh Chapter. With thirty scientific papers and two Bumese short stories published, this is his first book on politics. He presently works as a research scientist at the University of Missouri, Columbia, U.S.A.
