Peter Custers

Peter Custers is a theoretician and campaigner well known for his enduring commitment to Bangladeshi causes. In the early 1970s he gained first-hand experience in peasant organising while stationed in Dhaka as leading Dutch journalist. Subsequently, in the 1990s, he helped shape the international debate on the controversial, World Bank-coordinated flood control scheme called ‘Flood Action Plan, Bangladesh’ (FAP). For his tireless efforts to highlight Bangladeshi human rights’ issues towards European political institutions he was given an award as ‘Bangladesh Bandhu’ by the country’s government in 2010. Custers’ theoretical works notably include: an acclaimed study on women’s labour, ‘Capital Accumulation and Women's Labour in Asian Economies (re-published by Monthly Review Press in 2012); and his comprehensive study on arms’ production, ‘Questioning Globalized Militarism. Nuclear and Military Production and Critical Economic Theory' (Tulika Books, New Delhi/Merlin Press, London, 2007).
